Mathiesen Tops Final Block as Women’s Finalists Set at the European Championship of Champions

The women’s qualifying rounds have concluded at the 2025 European Championship of Champions in Vienna, with Norway’s Jenny Mathiesen emerging as the overall leader after 24 games at Plus Bowling Center.

Mathiesen closed out qualifying with a strong final block of 1752 and a 219 average, bringing her total score to 5291 and securing the top seed for Saturday’s finals. She posted consistent games of 184, 215, 231, 258, 227, 221, 206, and 210 to stay ahead of the field.

Germany’s Laura Beuthner finished close behind in second place with 5285 and a 220.2 average, while England’s Hayley Russell took third with 5205 and a 216.9 average. Finland’s Emma Palermaa (5138) and France’s Solene Goron (5133) rounded out the top five.

Among the day’s standout performers, Franziska Czech of Germany led the block with 1796 and a 224.5 average, the highest of the round. Other strong showings came from Mathiesen, Beuthner, Palermaa, and Czech Republic’s Ema Iwazawa, who scored 1699 for the fifth-best series of the day.

After three qualifying blocks, the top 12 athletes have officially advanced to the women’s finals:

What’s Next

The top 12 women will return to the lanes on Saturday, October 25, for Final Step 1, where they will bowl eight additional games with scores carried forward. The top four from that stage will advance to the semifinals (1 vs 4, 2 vs 3), followed by a best-of-three final to determine the 2025 European Championship of Champions women’s title.
