The doubles field at the World Youth Bowling Championships has been reduced to the final four in both divisions.

After match play in Kuching, Malaysia, four girls’ pairs and four boys’ pairs remain in the fight for gold. All eight pairs are already guaranteed at least bronze, but the bigger prize will be decided later this week.

The doubles event is played in Baker format, where both players share one score by alternating frames. After qualifying, the top 16 pairs advanced to match play and were split into two groups. The top two pairs from each group moved into the semifinals.

The semifinals are scheduled for Sunday, July 5, while the doubles finals will take place Monday, July 6.

Girls’ Doubles

The girls’ doubles medal round will feature Sweden, Finland, USA and Malaysia.

Sweden’s Nicole Layrisse and Maja Engberg won Group A with 18 points. The Swedish pair lost the opening match, but answered by winning the next six. They finished match play with 1,402 total and a 200.3 Baker average.

The second spot in Group A came down to extra bowling.

Finland’s Emma Palermaa and Stella Lökfors finished tied with Korea’s Jung Miteum and Noh Hyemin on 12 points. Korea had the higher total pinfall, but the semifinal spot had to be decided in a one-game roll-off. Finland won it 215-188 to stay alive in the gold medal race.

In Group B, Junior Team USA’s Erin Klemencic and Elizabeth Teuber produced one of the strongest blocks of the day. They won six of seven matches, finished with 18 points and averaged 226.0. Their 1,582 total was the highest in girls’ match play.

Malaysia’s Adelia Nur Irwan Syazalee and Adania Mohd Redzwan also finished with 18 points in Group B after winning six matches. USA took the top spot in the group thanks to the higher final-game score, but Malaysia still moved safely into the semifinals.

The girls’ semifinal matches will be Sweden against Malaysia and USA against Finland.

Boys’ Doubles

The boys’ doubles semifinals will feature Germany, USA, Finland and Qatar.

Germany’s Jaden Wolff and Phil Baumeister took first place in Group A with 16 points. Their day started with a 168 game and a loss, but they recovered quickly. The German pair won five matches, tied one and closed the block with four straight wins to move into the medal round.

Junior Team USA’s Dawson Peterson and Landin Jordan finished second in Group A with 15 points and a 217.9 average. They started by winning their first five matches. Two losses at the end made things tighter, but the early work was enough to secure a semifinal place.

Peru’s Daiki Kanashiro and Adrian Tokashiki came close in third with 13 points, but missed the cut.

In Group B, Finland’s Juho Vuoppola and Roni Leskinen led the way. After losing their first match, the Finnish pair won the next six and finished with 18 points. They also posted the highest boys’ match-play total at 1,602 and averaged 228.9.

Qatar’s Talal Al Marri and Abdulrahman Al Doseri took the second spot with 15 points. They had already done enough before the final match and held on to advance, even after losing the last game.

The boys’ semifinal matches will be Germany against Qatar and Finland against USA.
