The boys’ singles field at the IBF World Youth Bowling Championships in Kuching, Malaysia, has been cut from 16 to the final four.
After six games of qualifying and seven games of round-robin match play, Australia’s Julian Dinham, Sweden’s Emil Svensson, New Zealand’s Ben Pettit and the United States’ Landin Jordan are still in contention for the first gold medal of the championship.
The singles format started with six qualifying games, where the top 16 players advanced to match play. Those 16 bowlers were then split into two groups of eight. Each player bowled seven one-game matches, with three points awarded for a win and one point for a tie.
The top two players from each group moved into the semifinals.
Julian Dinham was the main character of the story in Group A. The Australian entered match play as the No. 13 qualifier after shooting 1,328 for six games, but he found another level when the matches started. He won six of his seven matches, won the group with 18 points and averaged 239.57 across the block.
Landin Jordan took the second semifinal spot from Group A. The American qualified ninth with 1,339 and then went 4-3 in match play. He finished with 12 points and averaged 228.00 over seven games.
In Group B, Emil Svensson came from even further down the qualifying list. The Swedish bowler qualified 15th with 1,326, but match play changed everything. He won five of seven matches, earned 15 points and averaged 224.29 to win the group.
Ben Pettit, however, followed a different path. The New Zealand bowler had already put himself in a strong position by qualifying third with 1,381, and he carried that form into match play. Pettit won five of his seven matches, finished with 15 points and averaged 220.29, becoming the only top-four qualifier to reach the semifinals.
The semifinal matches will now be played in a best-of-three format, with the winners advancing to the gold medal match. The final will also be decided in a best-of-three format.
In the semifinals, Ben Pettit will take on Julian Dinham, while Landin Jordan will face Emil Svensson.
The girls’ singles competition is already underway in Malaysia. Match play is scheduled to finish around 6 p.m. local time.
