New Hui Fen did not let the same story happen twice.

One week after losing the PWBA Bowlers Journal Rockford Open title match as the top seed, the Singaporean bowler returned to the No. 1 position at the PWBA Northern Colorado Open and finished the job.

New defeated Stephanie Zavala 228-202 in the championship match at Highland Park Lanes in Greeley, Colorado, to win her sixth career PWBA Tour title.

New earned the top seed after 24 games of qualifying and waited through the stepladder finals as Zavala climbed from the No. 4 position. The situation was very similar to last week, when Sin Li Jane climbed the ladder from fourth and defeated New in the final match.

This time, New controlled the title match from start to finish.

She struck five times in the first six frames and built a lead over Zavala. Zavala stayed clean early, but a split in the seventh frame made the comeback much harder. New stayed in front and closed the match with 228-202 to secure the title.

For the win, New earned $18,500. Zavala finished second and received $9,000.

Zavala reached the title match after winning three matches in the stepladder. She first defeated Sweden’s Nora Johansson 234-201. Johansson finished fifth and earned $5,150.

Zavala then beat Shannon Pluhowsky 257-221 in the second match. Pluhowsky finished fourth and earned $6,150.

In the semifinal, Zavala defeated Jordan Snodgrass 205-188 to advance to the final. Snodgrass finished third and earned $7,500.

The PWBA Tour now moves to Las Vegas for the USBC Queens, the first major of the season. The event will take place at Gold Coast Bowling Center from May 13-19.
