The International Bowling Federation has announced new rules regarding the use of urethane bowling balls in its events.
The changes take effect immediately and apply to all IBF competitions, including World Championships and World Cups.
Under the new IBF regulation, only urethane bowling balls manufactured with a minimum hardness of 78D are permitted. In addition, the ball must be approved by the United States Bowling Congress for use in IBF events.
The IBF also confirmed that random hardness checks may take place during competitions. If a bowling ball measures below 72D during testing, it will be considered non-compliant. Any ball that does not meet this standard will be removed from the competition.
The federation has referred member federations to the official USBC list of ineligible bowling balls. This list includes equipment that does not meet the required specifications for certain events. The document is publicly available through USBC.
The IBF clarified that some urethane bowling balls previously approved may measure below 78D but still remain on the USBC approved ball list. These balls may continue to be used in tournaments that decide to allow them. However, they are not permitted in IBF events under the new rule.
Sources tell that European Bowling Federation will follow the same rules. The decision to be made tomorrow after the meeting.
