Tom Daugherty holds the early lead after the opening round of the Surfside PBA New York Classic, as the 132-player field completed the first eight games of qualifying at ABC Gates Bowl.
The 51-year-old right-hander from Riverview, Florida, totaled 1,920 pins, averaging 240, to take the top position after the first eight games on the 38-foot Bear oil pattern.
Ethan Crouse sits in second place with 1,895. He recovered from a slower start and finished strong, averaging over 260 in his last three games. Kyle Sherman follows in third place with 1,888, continuing his strong stretch in recent weeks after finishing tenth at the PBA Ohio Classic last Sunday.
Chris Via is fourth with 1,875, while Darren Tang rounds out the top five with 1,861.
Kyle Troup holds sixth place with 1,857, followed by Nate Garcia in seventh with 1,850. Iceland's Arnar Jonsson is eighth with 1,849, Alex Horton sits ninth with 1,834, and Alec Keplinger completes the top ten with 1,824.
The scoring pace in Rochester is much lower compared to last week’s PBA Ohio Classic, with the current field average sitting around 210 after the first round of qualifying.
Matt Russo currently sits in 44th place, holding the final qualifying spot with 1,723 pins, averaging 215.
EJ Tackett, who is still hunting his first title this season, currently sits in 54th place with 1,707 total pins (213 average).
Spencer Robarge, who entered the event fresh off his first career PBA Tour title at last week’s PBA Ohio Classic, is in 95th place with 1,640.
The field is also missing Jason Belmonte, as he takes a short break from the tour.

Qualifying will continue with another eight-game round today, after which the field will be cut to the top 44 players. They will advance to Thursday’s Advancers Round, where six additional games will determine the players moving on to elimination match play.
The stepladder finals of the PBA New York Classic are scheduled for Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m. ET on The CW.
