The pins were certainly falling on Wednesday at David Small’s Pro Bowl West in Fort Wayne.
The 96-player field came out swinging on the 39-foot Mike Aulby oil pattern, putting up 11 perfect games and some massive totals across the first 12 games of qualifying at the PBA Indiana Classic.
Right at the front of that scoring parade is England’s Dom Barrett. He took control at the qualifying round 1 and did everything in his power to maintain that position.
Barrett finished his first dozen games with a staggering 2,965 total, putting him at +565. He looked incredibly comfortable from the very first frame, even tossing a perfect 300 in game four of his morning block and repeated that exact feat in game four of the evening round.
Barrett is currently outpacing the rest of the 96-player field by more than 20 pins per game!
Catching him will be a challenge, but a very talented top 10 is trying to close the gap.
Sean Lavery-Spahr sits in second place with a 2,948 total, followed closely by Timmy Tan at 2,930 and Marshall Kent with 2,927. Mitch Hupé rounds out the top five with a 2,897 total.
The rest of the top 10 features a tight cluster of heavy hitters trying to keep pace. Matt Ogle sits in sixth, Tomas Käyhkö in seventh, and Ryan Barnes in eighth. Bill O'Neill holds ninth place, while Chris Via rounds out the top 10 with a 2,869 total.
A bit further down the leaderboard, local fans have plenty to cheer for.
Indiana native EJ Tackett, bowling just down the road from his hometown, is now in 19th place with a 2,842 total.
Meanwhile, Kyle Troup, who captured this tournament's title back in 2024, is trying to recreate that past magic. Troup started slow and sat in 64th after his first six games, but he found his footing in the evening to climb up to 39th.
Troup is currently 40 pins behind the cut, and the race for that top 32 is incredibly tense.
Right now, AJ Johnson and François Lavoie are tied for 31st-32nd place. They both hold a 2,798 total, meaning players currently need to average just over 233 to stay on the right side of the cut line.
The scoring pace remained steady throughout the day. Often, bowlers quickly figure out how the lanes transition and what equipment to use (or avoid), and scores tend to rise in later rounds, but the field average between the morning and evening blocks barely changed.
The 96 bowlers averaged 226.21 in their first six games, and 226.85 in their next six. That is an increase of less than a single pin.
Stat of the Day: Scoring Pace
Incredible Consistency
The 96-player field increased their overall pace by less than a single pin (+0.64) during the second block!
Even with that consistent scoring pace, we still saw some massive leaderboard shifts.
Ben Sobel was the story of the evening block. He started the second round way down in 82nd place but found something special on the lanes, improving his pace by nearly 38 pins a game. He vaulted 47 spots up the standings and now sits in 35th, knocking right on the door of the cut.
On the flip side, TJ Rock finished the morning shift in second place, averaging an impressive 250. Unfortunately, the evening block was a different story. His pace dropped by 32 pins a game, causing him to slide 27 spots down to 29th, putting him dangerously close to the cut line.
Everything will be decided on Thursday. The field returns for two more six-game blocks to wrap up the 24-game qualifying marathon.
From there, only the top 32 will advance to Friday's elimination rounds.
After Friday morning’s elimination round, only 16 players will advance to the next stage, where they will bowl another six games. From there, only the top five will move on to the stepladder finals.
The stepladder finals will air live on Sunday, March 22 at 4 p.m. ET on The CW.
