The VI Pan American Women's Adult Championship is underway in Bogota, Colombia, and the first gold went to Breanna Clemmer of the United States.
Twelve nations are competing at the Bowling Industry center from September 29 to October 3: Aruba, the Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru, the United States and Venezuela.
The singles podium
The opening event had 61 players from 11 countries, each bowling six games on a 45-foot pattern.
Clemmer led the field with 1,341, a 223.5 average. It was her first international singles gold, despite more than 30 international medals in her career.
"To be able to start the week with singles gold is an awesome feeling," Clemmer told USBC after the opening day.
Her teammate Maggie Thoma took silver with 1,300 (216.7) in her first international event for Team USA. Colombia's Juliana Botero gave the home crowd a medal, taking bronze with 1,271 (211.8).
American Elizabeth Teuber finished fourth with 1,269, just two pins short of the podium.
Colombia on home lanes
The hosts have brought a strong six. Alongside Botero, Colombia fields María José Rodríguez, Juliana Franco, Sara Duque, Sara Giraldo and Laura Plazas.
Rodríguez and Franco arrived in form, with titles earlier this year at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo and the South American Games in Santa Fe. Rodríguez finished fifth in singles with 1,264, only seven pins behind Botero. Laura Plazas (12th) and Sara Duque (14th) also made the top 15.

The United States placed five bowlers in the top eight. Aumi Guerra of the Dominican Republic broke up that run in seventh with 1,236.
Venezuela had the strongest group outside the top two nations. Karen Marcano (1,228), Gilant Gonzalez (1,210) and Joan Gonzalez (1,203) finished ninth, tenth and eleventh.
