The long wait is over. The HBO Original documentary series Born to Bowl premieres today, Monday, March 16, bringing professional bowling to a global television audience.
The five-part series follows five PBA Tour players - Kyle Troup, Anthony Simonsen, EJ Tackett, Cameron Crowe, and Jason Belmonte - as they compete for titles, respect, and much needed money.
The series is directed by James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte and executive produced in part by actor and director Ben Stiller. It is narrated by Liev Schreiber.
“This is not just a series about bowlers winning. It’s about the heart it takes to put everything you’ve got into this sport,” directors James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte said in a recent interview when speaking about the vision behind the project.
The hope is that Born to Bowl could have a similar impact to Netflix’s Drive to Survive, which brought millions of new fans to Formula 1 by focusing on personalities and behind-the-scenes stories.
That shift helped F1 attract younger audiences and grow its global presence - something professional bowling could benefit from as well.
