After a week full of bowling on animal patterns, the PBA World Series of Bowling (WSOB) XVI has moved into the PBA World Championship phase, with competition heating up at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nevada.

EJ Tackett continues to lead the event. After his first eight games on the Earl Anthony oil pattern, he scored 1,827, bringing his total to 13,217. Tackett leads the 50 remaining players in the field and will compete in another eight-game qualifying round before a cut to the top 16 later today.

Throughout the WSOB XVI, Tackett was the only player to make it to the Round of 16 in each of the animal pattern championships (Scorpion, Viper, Chameleon, and Shark). Jason Belmonte, Boog Krol, Matt Ogle and Jesper Svensson each advanced to the Round of 16 in three of four events.

In the Advancer Round 1 Sweden's Pontus Andersson made the biggest leap, moving into 29th place from the last 50th spot with a block of 1,958. Andrew Anderson advanced from 25th to 14th, and Kris Prather made a strong move with two 300 games, climbing from 44th to 25th.

The Advancer Round 2 begins later today, at 10 a.m. local time. The top 16 players will advance to round-robin match play after which the top five players will then compete in the championship round on Saturday, May 22, at 3 p.m. local.
