The 2024 USBC Masters champion DeeRonn Booker recently revealed that he had been diagnosed with BPDCN, or blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
The 35-year-old right-hander from Albuquerque, New Mexico, began chemotherapy and shared a message thanking his friends, family and the bowling community for their support.
“After receiving some of the worst news of my life just a few weeks ago, my friends, family and bowling community showed me that I wasn’t alone,” Booker said. “I won’t have an update on how the treatment is going for another couple of weeks, but my body is handling the chemotherapy very well. We will play the waiting game to see if it killed all the bad cells, which will allow my body to produce new healthy cells.
“I feel the support and prayers from everyone, which is getting me through this first round of chemo. I’m a fighter, and I’m going to beat this. Much love to everyone. More updates later.”
Booker won the 2024 USBC Masters at Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas. The victory made him the third African-American bowler to win a major championship on the PBA Tour.
Booker’s family also launched the “Hope for DeeRonn: Fighting BPDCN Together” fundraiser to help cover chemotherapy, specialized medication, medical bills, co-pays and possible travel for clinical trials and other treatment.
