Brandon Bonta has been named the 2026 Harry Golden PBA Rookie of the Year. The 23-year-old from Wichita, Kansas, collected 58.78% of the vote from PBA members and media to take the award.
His season started with a perfect game in a major final, and he stayed among the tour's top performers until the end.
A rookie among the leaders
Bonta did not just lead the rookie class. He competed with the best players on tour all year.
He finished third overall in points with 18,023, the most of any first-year player. His $163,800 in prize money set a new single-season rookie earnings record. He broke the previous mark, held by Ryan Barnes since 2025, before the season was even a third complete, reaching it at the fifth title event.
Consistency backed up the big numbers. Bonta cashed 11 times in 17 title events and reached the TV finals on five occasions. He posted six top-10 finishes and averaged 223.56 across 333 games.
The majors were where he stood out most. He finished inside the top seven in four of the five, with results of first, sixth, fifth and seventh. The U.S. Open was his only miss, where he fell short in the pre-tournament qualifier.
The night it all started
Bonta's first major title came in his first PBA Tour stop. At the PBA Players Championship in Arlington, the season opener, he made the stepladder finals as the fourth seed.
Three wins took him to the title match. Along the way, he eliminated college teammate Spencer Robarge, Swedish major champion Jesper Svensson and Graham Fach.
Waiting at the top was EJ Tackett, who went on to claim the 2026 PBA Player of the Year award, his fourth. Bonta struck 12 times in a row to beat him with a 300. It was only the 36th perfect game ever bowled on a televised game.
A crowded field
The margin of the vote hides how strong the competition was. Brandon Bonta was one of four rookies to win on tour in 2026, making this the most successful rookie class in PBA history with six titles between them.
Alex Horton was the closest challenger with 32.97% of the vote. He won twice, including a major at the PBA Tournament of Champions. Robarge also won two titles, while Austin Grammar added one more.
Bonta becomes the latest name on an award honoring Harry "Goose" Golden, the former PBA Tour tournament director and 1983 Hall of Fame inductee. Ryan Barnes, his college teammate, won it the year before.
