James Lui of Hong Kong and Nora Lyana Nastasia of Malaysia captured the top titles at the 50th MWA Thailand International Open Bowling Championships in Bangkok.
In the men’s division, James Lui entered the stepladder finals as the top seed and needed just one match to claim the title.
He defeated Muhd Jaris Goh of Singapore 209–183 in the championship match. Lui started with three consecutive strikes to build an early lead, but Goh responded with a strong run of strikes to close the gap. However, Goh's split in the later frames shifted momentum to Lui's side and he secured the win with key shots in the ninth and tenth frames.
In the women’s division, Nora Lyana Nastasia claimed her second career Thailand Open title. She faced top seed New Hui Fen of Singapore in the final and had to win twice to take the championship.
Nastasia won the first match 217–171 to force a deciding game. In the second match, she secured the title with a convincing 257–181 victory.
Nastasia advanced through the stepladder by defeating Gillian Lim and Qurratu Ain Izdihar in the semifinal match. Last year Nastasia finished third.
Earlier in the tournament, both champions also led their respective qualifying rounds. Lui topped the men’s Round 3 standings with 1372, while New Hui Fen led the women’s standings with 1368 before the finals.
The 50th edition of the Thailand Open featured a strong international field, with 204 men and 71 women competing.
Players bowled three blocks of five games during qualification, followed by the Masters finals to determine the champions. The tournament took place from April 5 to April 20.
